HISTORY & HERITAGE

From humble beginnings, Mylands is now into its sixth generation of master craftsmen.

Mylands began in 1884 when ‘Honest’ John Myland set up his modest shop in the heart of Lambeth, South London. Unlike other paint makers of the day, John insisted on using only the very best materials that would allow him to create colours that were lustrous and flawless, with a quality that had rarely been seen before.

Originally selling to trade clients only, Mylands was the paint of choice for interior designers, decorators and scenic artists working in the film, television and theatre industry for many years.

Mylands remained a best kept secret amongst this discerning group until 2012, when our paints were made available to customers direct for the first time with the launch of ‘Colours of London’, 120 London-made and inspired timeless colours.

Throughout our rich and colourful history, Mylands has played a starring role in some of the world’s greatest screen productions. Our longstanding association with the film, television and theatre industry has seen our paints featured in James Bond, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Mr Selfridge, Les Miserables and Cinderella to name a few.

In 1985, Mylands received the ultimate accolade – a coveted royal warrant.

Today, we’re still in Lambeth; the only remaining paint manufacturer in London, and John’s great-grandson Dominic Myland proudly continues the family tradition of perfection in paint.
